    Victorian Kitchen Visit

    Key Stages 1 and 2

The visit aims to reconstruct a typical day at Cannon Hall through the eyes of servants and is centred around the Victorian Kitchen. Step back in time to become a servant under the watchful eye of the Housekeeper and the Cook. Although the Kitchen Visit is essentially history-focused, it does meet most cross-curricular needs including numeracy and literacy, science and technology, art and design. Children and adults adopt the role of household servants and carry out various tasks throughout the day. Lunch is prepared on an original Cooking Range and you can make your own butter in a traditional larder. Polish the brasses, boots and saddles for your master and mistress and wash clothes the old-fashionedway. Tour round the house to see what life was like upstairs.

    Victorian Servant Visit

    Key Stages 1 and 2

The visit is flexible to enable teachers to choose from a range of activities that would have been carried out by Victorian servants. Choose between various kitchen, household crafts or cleaning duties. A half-day or full day visit can be arranged. The teacher may choose from a range of activities to fit the specific needs of their class. Most activities incorporate, amongst others; literacy and numeracy key skills, as well as aspects of history, art and other curriculum areas. Activities can include cold cooking; making lemonade; polishing; making peg dolls and Victorian toys. Groups who are staying for a full day may bring a packed lunch to eat in the servants' hall or also can eat or drink anything they have made during the sessions.

    Environments Alive Visit

    Key Stages 1,2,3

Environments Alive is primarily a science-focused visit ranging from basic ecology, meteorology and archaeology but it has very strong cross-curricular links. It offers the inspiring learning experience of investigating natural processes that can be discovered outdoors though there are indoor equivalents for all activities. You can choose two sessions for a full day or one for a half day from these sessions:

  • Mini-beasts
  • Pond Dipping
  • Wildlife Trackers
  • Plants and their products
  • The Weather and its work
  • Buried Treasure

    Arty Fun and Artefacts Visit

    Key Stages 1,2,3

Cannon Hall Museum has a stunning collection of art ranging from glass ware, metal ware, ceramics, furniture and paintings. This visit gives you the chance to be creative but also to look at the science, technology and history behind the collection. Examine the properties of clay and its irreversible changes, use the curiosities from our handling collection to inspire your own clay work which we can fire for you and investigate how a variety of household items have changed through time.

    Language through paintings visit

    Kay Stages 2 and 3

This session is designed to meet the needs of Gifted and Talented pupils. This is a half-day session designed by Barnsley's Performing Arts Development Service. The session uses story telling and role play techniques to interpret some of Cannon Hall's collection of paintings. Children will be inspired to use their literacy skills creatively.

    Un-Locke-ing Innovation

    Key Stages 2 and 3

Become a construction engineer for the day and help Joseph Locke, the innovative Victorian railway engineer and colleague of Robert Stevenson to build bridges. First you will have to use your team building skills. Handle the historic tools of the trade and follow an architectural trail in our identification challenges. To build your bridge you will be given 'money' to buy your choice of resources so you have to plan carefully. Finally use your skills to test, improve and sell your bridge.

Past Play workshop and Toy Box in Time

Early Years and Key Stage 1

Find out how toys and games have changed through time by playing with a variety of historic toys. This session will provide the chance to compare old and new, identify different materials, group similar toys such as vehicles or puppets and find out how simple mechanical toys developed right up to our own time. The Toy Box in Time of games and other objects with its accompanying teacher's pack can be loaned as part of an outreach session.

War at Your Door workshop and Trunk of 1940s Life

    Key Stage 2

Find out what everyday life was like on the home front. Our artefacts will illustrate the trials of the evacuation, the struggles of rationing and the fear of gas attack. Re-live an 'air raid', try on items such as a soldier's jacket or helmet and research the time using a variety of authentic documents and posters. The Trunk of 1940s Life with its accompanying teacher's pack can be loaned as part of an outreach session.

    Crime Scene Cannon Hall

    Key Stage 2 and 3

Help to solve a fictitious crime using your forensic skills. Some vases have gone missing but only you can find them with the clues provided such their height, weight, shadow shape, material, imprint and even the acidity of soil found on some of them. The Fired Up Science box of handling ceramics and other objects with its accompanying teacher's pack can be loaned as part of an outreach session.

    Victorian Household

    Key Stages 1, 2 and 3

Cannon Hall was inhabited throughout the Victorian period by a wealthy family and their servants. This session will enable you to uncover more about them. Find out who they were and how they lived using photographic and census information. The handling collection of Victorian objects will provide interesting insights into everyday life and get the chance to dress up in a range of genuine Victorian clothing. The Victorian Home on Loan box with its accompanying teacher's pack can be loaned as part of an outreach session.

    Study Skills at Cannon Hall

Sessions are delivered by Learning Performance Seminars and enable pupils to use the collections in Cannon Hall as part of the course. Study Skills sessions aim to improve pupil's ability to remember information and be successful in exams. Students will benefit from the opportunity to learn in pleasant surroundings, in a non-school setting. They will take part in interactive workshops led by teachers who specialise in Study Skills training.A range of options is also available for Key Stage 2 - 4 pupils of different abilities, in which pupils are taught practical techniques which can be applied to any subject. Built into each seminar is the chance for students to learn memory techniques and, weather permitting, take part in 'brain gym' activities in the parks and gardens. We also offer inset training for teachers, learning mentors and classroom assistants.

    House Tour

Trails and tours are popular options for school visits to Cannon Hall. Delivered by our education staff, a tour lasts approximately one hour. They can also be tailored to tie in with work carried out in school. In order for your class to obtain the most from their visit, take a guided tour, or follow a trail through the museum or park. Various trails are available focusing on either the museum interior, or the parks and gardens. Different trails are available to suit different ages and abilities. By following a trail your class will be able to interact with the museum and use skills in reading, writing, numeracy, art and science. Please note that trails are only available during Museum opening hours.
