What is the Passport to Leisure (PTL) scheme?
Passport to Leisure (PTL) is a scheme run by Barnsley Council which enables certain groups of people, resident within the Barnsley Borough, to enjoy many sporting, recreational, leisure and retail services at concessionary prices.
Am I eligible for membership to the scheme?
The following Barnsley residents are eligible for membership to the scheme:
- People in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance
- Those on a training scheme (non-waged)
- Students aged 18+ in full-time education
- The over 60's
- Disabled people
- Incapacity/ESA claimants
- People receiving income support, working tax credit, housing/council tax benefit, carer's allowance
- An unemployed adult dependant of the above
- A dependant junior of the above (age 3 - 15)
- 16 and 17 year olds
- Disabled juniors
- Carer cards are also available for people in receipt of a disability benefit
NB. Residents under 18 can now access free swimming at Barnsley Premier Leisure facilities with a MI Card, a PTL card is only requied by under 18's wishing to use the other facilities and activities included in the PTL scheme at discounted rates.
Where can I apply for or renew a PTL card?
You can pick up an application leaflet and apply for, or renew your existing PTL card at any of the following application centres:
- Metrodome Leisure Complex
- Leisure Centres at: Athersley, Dearneside, Hoyland, Penistone, Royston
- Darton Community Sports Centre
- Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre
- Wombwell Swimming Pool
- Hillies Golf Course
- Barnsley Connects offices at: Athersley, Civic Hall, Cudworth, Darton, Dearne, Hoyland, Penistone, Royston and Wombwell
- Barnsley Central Library
- Branch Libraries at: Cudworth, Darfield, Darton Ward, Dodworth, Goldthorpe, Grimethorpe, Hoyland Nether, Monk Bretton, Penistone, Priory Campus, Roundhouse, Royston, Thurnscoe, Wombwell and Worsbrough

How much does a PTL card cost?
The cost of a Passport to Leisure card depends upon your eligibility category and payment can be made in cash:

disabled adults and carers
cards cost £2 and last for 5 years

students age 18+
cards cost £1 and last until 30 September in the current academic year

16 and 17 year olds
cards cost £1 and last until the applicant's 18th birthday

over 60's
cards are free of charge and last for 5 years
-
dependant juniors, disabled juniors and carers
cards are free of charge and last for 1 year
-
all other categories
cards cost £1 and last for 1 year
How do I apply for or renew my PTL card?
To apply for, or renew an existing PTL membership card you need to go to one of the application centres listed above and take the following:
- Proof that you are eligible for membership- e.g. letter / form confirming benefit details, bank statement, proof of age etc.
- A recent passport sized photo - an ordinary snapshot or digital photo can be used, or the photo from your existing card if you are renewing your membership
- The relevant registration fee - see above
You will be asked to complete an application form and your PTL card will then be issued straight away. Renewal forms are automatically sent to members when their existing cards are due to expire.
NB: If you are over 60 you may renew your existing card by post. To renew by post you must send the following to: Barnsley MBC, Passport to Leisure, PO Box No 597, Barnsley. S71 9EW - please mark the envelope 'to be opened by addressee only'. Your new card will be posted out to you within 5 days of receipt of your renewal application.

- your old PTL card or a new photo
- a stamped, self addressed envelope (for us to send your new card back to you)

Passport to Leisure Office: Monday to Thursday, 9:00am - 5:00pm and Friday 9:00am - 4:00pm.

Where can I get discounts with my PTL Card?
- Juniors age 3-15 with a PTL card can obtain discounts at Barnsley Premier Leisure facilities for the teen gym and 360 membership, Mu-sa Martial Arts Centre in Wombwell and Barnsley Academy in Kendray.
- Young people under 18 years of age need to show their MI Card to access free swimming at Barnsley Premier Leisure facilities.
- Adults with a PTL card can obtain discounts at the places mentioned below.
NB. PTL members aged 60+ with an in date category D card can now swim
for free at Barnsley Premier Leisure swimming pools.
