Sports and Active Recreation - General Information

Sport has always been important to the people of Barnsley bringing benefits to individuals, families, communities as well as the whole borough. The results are there for all to see - sporting heroes, the undiminished enthusiasm of its participants, the diversity of the opportunities offered by clubs and organisations, an enthusiastic, committed and knowledgeable army of volunteers and well frequented sports centres.

Barnsley Premier Leisure operate a diverse range of leisure facilities throughout the borough including the Metrodome Leisure Complex, Royston Leisure Centre & Civic Hall, Athersley Leisure Centre, Darton Community Sports Centre, Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre, Penistone Leisure Centre, Hoyland Leisure Centre, Wombwell Swimming Pool, Dearneside Leisure Centre and Hillies Pavillion Golf Club(for more information see related links at the right-hand side of the page).

Barnsley MBC operate Passport to Leisure (PTL), this is a concessionary scheme for targeted groups. The overall aim of the scheme is to encourage greater use of leisure facilities by disadvantaged groups in the community. A cross boundary agreement with Wakefield and the three other South Yorkshire local authorities enables adult members of the PTL scheme to obtain lower cost access to leisure facilities in these areas as well as in Barnsley (for more information see related links at the right-hand side of the page).

Barnsley residents aged 60+ and under 18 can access swimming free of charge at Barnsley Premier Leisure swimming pools.  Those aged 60+ need to show a valid Passport to Leisure card.  Young people under 18 need to show a MI card.

The Barnsley Sport & Active Recreation Partnership (BSARP) is the steering group and strategic lead for sport and active recreation in the borough. BSARP is made up from a variety of cross sector organisations and agencies and is responsible for Pathways to Active Participation - a strategy for sport and active recreation in Barnsley. BSARP produces, monitors, reviews and evaluates annual Action Plans and reports progress.

The Barnsley Sport & Activity Forum (BSAF) was formally constituted in September 2003. Membership is open to all clubs, individuals and any other interested parties. BSAF aim to identify the many activities that take place within the borough - recognising that there is a need for local activities that can accommodate the needs of local communities. BSAF also aim to help individuals achieve their full sporting potential. BSAF are now a company limited by guarantee, they employ Community Sport & Activity Development Officers and Community Coaches who are helping to develop safe and active communities in Barnsley by providing a range of sport, recreation and physical activity opportunities within and for local communities (for more information see related links at the right-hand side of the page).
