Barnsley District has an establishment of 128 civil support staff and 385 police officers.

The District Headquarters is based at Churchfield in Barnsley Town Centre, with a second major police station being located at Wombwell serving the east of the district. Community officers operate from the various section stations located in the various townships of Royston, Hoyland, Goldthorpe, Cudworth & Dodworth, Penistone operates as a Police sector with a number of duty group officers and supervisors based at the station to serve the remote western part of the District.
