Consultation on design guide

A new guide, which aims to significantly improve the quality of design of new housing developments, is going out to public consultation.

Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield councils have collaborated to prepare the guidance, in partnership with Transform South Yorkshire, the sub-regional housing regeneration partnership.

The ‘South Yorkshire Residential Design Guide’ is a comprehensive document aimed principally at developers. It seeks to promote well designed, sustainable housing development.

The guide covers a wide range of topics including space standards, parking, street patterns and landscaping. The guide seeks to complement the national ‘Building for Life’ assessment scheme which ‘scores’ housing developments using twenty criteria.

Comments are welcome from anyone on the document. The draft guide can be viewed on the council’s website from the link above, in the Planning section and in the Barnsley Connects office in the Civic (opening times 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday), and in Barnsley Central Library’s archives section (opening times Monday 9.30am to 7pm, Tuesday 9.30am to 5.30pm, Wednesday, 9.30am to 7pm, Thursday and Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday, 9.30am to 4pm).

Further information on the guide can be gained from the council’s Planning and Transportation service on (01226) 772628.

Comments should be emailed to transformsy@sheffield.gov.uk or posted to SYRDG Consultation, Transform South Yorkshire, 25 Carbrook Hall Road, Sheffield, S9 2EJ. All comments need to be received by 4pm on Friday, 23 July.
