Article: Education for children who are sick and cannot attend school Article Body You will want your child to continue with their education as far as his or her medical condition allows. If your child is sick, either at home or in hospital, we aim to make sure that they are not without access to their education for more than 15 working days. If he or she has an illness or diagnosis that indicates prolonged or recurring periods of absence from school, we aim, as far as possible, to have arrangements in place from day one. Education will be of similar quality to that available in school, including a broad and balanced curriculum. Qualifying pupils educated at home receive a minimum entitlement of five hours per week. This will be increased where necessary, after review, to help them keep up with their studies. This is particularly important for pupils approaching public examinations. Tuition may be in the form of one-to-one, in small groups or via an accredited e-learning programme Nisai Virtual Academy. Whether your child is able to access this entitlement will depend on medical advice and, perhaps more importantly, when they feel able to cope with it. The right balance must be struck between encouraging pupils to study and recognising when they are not well enough to benefit from teaching. Your child's school should have a policy and named person responsible for dealing with pupils who are unable to attend because of medical needs, so please contact them in the first instance.
