Article Body

Some household waste is now classed as hazardous and there are some facilities in place for householders to dispose of certain items.

The following items of household waste are classed as hazardous waste and there are facilities for their disposal/recycling at some or all household waste recycling centres:

  • Domestic freezers
  • Domestic refrigerators
  • Televisions
  • Computer monitors
  • Fluorescent light tubes
  • Asbestos and plasterboard
  • Gas cannisters (domestic size)

Any other hazardous waste should be disposed of by the householder using an approved contractor, details of which can be found in local trade and telephone directories.

Customers intending to use a household waste recycling centre should read the information on household waste recycling centres in the related content section.

Businesses should use the local telephone directory and trade directories to find an appropriate contractor to dispose of hazardous waste from their business as we have no facilities for commercial hazardous waste.

If you would like further information please contact the Waste Management team:

  • by completing the online enquiry form.
  • by email to wastemanagement@barnsley.gov.uk
  • by telephone on 01226 772045. Phone lines are open from 9am to 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 4pm Friday
  • by writing to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, The Waste Management Co-ordinator, Waste Management Services, Smithies Lane Depot, Barnsley, S71 1NL.

It would be helpful if you could specify in detail the type and quantity of hazardous waste you are enquiring about.
