The directorate for law and governance
Borough Secretary’s is a small area of the council, but it plays a big part in the life of Barnsley Council as a whole. We’re responsible for law and governance for the entire authority, and make sure that our organisation works within the law, and in line with the highest standards of governance.
The Borough Secretary is the council’s principal legal officer and secretary to the council (he is supported in this by the council’s Governance Unit). He’s also the monitoring officer, electoral registration officer and the ‘proper officer’ for the local registration service.
The Borough Secretary is responsible for the good governance of both the council and the borough-wide Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), as well as for the delivery of important front-facing services to the public and community.
The department is divided into two business groups. For a more detailed look at each, simply explore the sections below:
Careers
As you’d expect from a directorate with such a broad sweep of responsibilities, we’ve a wide range of career opportunities. These range from high level posts through to clerical and administrative positions.
