National Graduate Development Programme

We’re deeply committed to the National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP), which is central to the government’s initiative to modernise the public sector. The NGDP will make the most of your creative thinking and vision – empowering you to be a key player in our future. Providing ample opportunity to progress quickly within the sector, it’s the ideal platform for a fulfilling career.

Placements

Commissioned, managed and delivered nationally by the Improvement & Development Agency for local government (IDeA), the NGDP combines local placements in a host authority, like Barnsley, with an integrated national programme of learning and development.

On the NGDP, following a national induction event designed to start you on your career journey, you’ll experience a range of areas throughout the council on a variety of useful placements. Each will give you a real taste of the impact you could make here:

  • Four placements lasting around 26 weeks
  • Chief Executive and Scrutiny in first 12 months
  • Second 12 months is determined by your own preference, availability and ambitions

As a combination, your placements must meet the requirements of the NGDP by covering certain areas, eg. strategy and policy, frontline service and support service.

Support is there for you throughout, from a diverse range of people including a dedicated placement co-ordinator, mentors, managers and a national network of NGDP trainees and alumni.

Progression

The entire programme has been tailored to equip graduates with all they need to go far in the public sector. As a graduate, you’ll also be able to gain the Post Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management Course, which has been specifically designed for the NGDP in association with Warwick University.

You’ll have the option of attending the Graduate Leadership Academy for 6 three day modules, which are a mix of:

  • Lectures
  • Group work
  • Case studies
  • Project work
  • Private reading, preparation and study

You’ll also be required to complete a work-based dissertation.
