Weekend weather warning

The council’s Highways department is asking people to be careful when driving over the weekend, as snow is expected on Saturday afternoon (4 February), becoming heavier in the evening, then followed by rain and freezing temperatures.
Our gritting teams will be out as usual to treat the borough’s major arterial routes. The rock salt used works best when it is turned into a solution, which happens when it is crushed by passing vehicles. This will then prevent water freezing until to around -6 to -8 Celsius. However, it is rendered ineffective at around -10 Celsius. If temperatures fall as low as expected, drivers will have to be particularly vigilant....

A Barnsley woman’s environmental offences have cost her over £300 following a case brought to Barnsley Magistrates court by Barnsley Council.
On Thursday, 26 January, Miss Toyah Pritchard, 31, of Royd Avenue, Millhouse Green, Penistone, pleaded guilty to an offence of fly-tipping waste under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Section 33 (1a).
The council received a report in February 2011, that waste had been dumped on a track off Annat Royd Lane, near Ingbirchworth reservoir, Penistone. A Regulatory Services field officer investigated the matter and found evidence in the waste which lead them to an uninhabited property in Deepcar, Sheffield. ...
Fuel poverty grants for needy households

Needy Barnsley households are being urged to apply for a grant from the government’s fuel poverty scheme, Warm Front.
The scheme provides grants to make hard-to-heat homes more energy efficient. Grants can be used for heating and insulation improvements by residents on certain income-related benefits, living in poorly insulated properties, or without a working central heating system.
Qualifying households can get improvements worth up to £3,500 (£6,000 where oil central heating and other alternative technologies are recommended).
Typical measures can include heating, boiler replacement, insulation to cavity walls and lofts, draught-proofing and converting solid-fuel open fires to glass-fronted....
French and Spanish taster sessions

A range of free taster courses are on offer during February at a number of learning centres in Barnsley.
For anyone who would like to brush up their language skills, or start a new language in time for the holidays, there are beginners’ classes in French and Spanish. Course members will learn basic words and phrases, such as numbers, how to greet people and buy drinks and snacks.
French for beginners will be held at the Tower Room in Silkstone Parish Church, High Street, Silkstone, on Mondays, from 1pm to 2.30pm on February 6, 20 and 27 and March 5.
There will also be an introductory Spanish course at Penistone Grammar School, Huddersfield Road, starting on Wednesday, 8 February and running for four weeks until 7 March, from 1pm to 2.30pm....
