Family searches can be undertaken by yourself at the crematorium office during office hours. Bereavement Services staff can search on your behalf if you can supply them with a date of death.

Barnsley Council has 21 cemeteries and the crematorium for which all records are available for family tree searches.

We do have a room available for families to view the books.

This service is available to anyone

Procedure

If you would like Bereavement Services staff to undertake the search for you, please provide as much information as possible.

Charges and fees

There is currently no charge for this service.

Opening times/locations

8.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, 8.30am to 4.30pm on Friday

Based at Barnsley Crematorium, Doncaster Road, Ardsley, Barnsley S71 5EH

Alternatively requests/queries can be made via e-mail at any time, and these will be actioned during normal office hours.

How the customer can help

Information needed for staff to search is:

Full name of the deceased and date of death. If you don't know the date of death please provide an approximate year or range of years to aid the search.

Response times/next steps

On receipt of the information, Bereavement Services will get back to you within seven working days.

Additional Notes

A member of the public has all cemetery records for public viewing.  The information is available for public viewing from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and these are in cemetery order and alphabetical order.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be able to spend the day with my family history search?

Yes the room is available all day for public use.

Are all the records computerised?

Unfortunately not all of them. From the year 2000 they are all on computer but the Technical Clerk will have to search these on your behalf.

Are there any maps of the graves available?

Yes we do have maps of all the cemeteries and all the graves photocopied and these are available for the public.
