Article: Repatriation with a deceased relative within England and Wales Article Body This is if you need to bring back a body from abroad, for burial or cremation. Eligibility This service is available from your funeral director to all members of the public. Procedure If a death occurs abroad, you will need to register the death according to the local regulations of that country and a death certificate should be obtained. To bring a body back to England and Wales you will need either the death certificate or an authorisation for the removal of the body from the country of death by someone authorised to do so. Charges/fees There will be no charge from Bereavement Services for repatriation of a body from abroad, but normal fees and charges will occur for the cremation or burial from the council where you intend to bury or cremate the deceased. These fees and charges along with the fee for repatriation will all occur on your funeral invoice, from your funeral director. We do have an answer machine and all enquiries, via this method will be answered during office hours. How the customer can help To arrange a funeral of the body in England or Wales you will need: An authenticated translation of a death certificate showing the cause of death. A certificate of No Liability to Regisiter from the Registrar in England and Wales. This certificate must be obtained from the registrar in whose area it is intended to bury or cremate the deceased. To arrange a cremation you will need: A cremation order from the Home Office. Or a form 6 from the coroner will be required. If the death was from natural causes, the Home Office will require the following documentation: application for cremation (form A). all original documentation from the country where death occurred. translation of documents if necessary. If the death was not natural it will be referred to the coroner who will open an inquest to investigate the cause and circumstances of death. Once the coroner's investigations are complete he will issue a form E. The funeral director will help you with all of the documentation and arrangements. Response times/next steps When a death has occurred abroad, repatriation usually can take place approximately one week later, once all the paper work is in place. If you need to organise a burial or cremation this can be booked in advance of the body being released from abroad. Will I be able to use the coffin that comes from abroad, for the burial or cremation to take place in England? If the coffin is in a decent condition you should be able to use this, but ask the funeral director for their advice on the matter. If I am abroad with the person who dies abroad, do I have to return to England with the body? No - you can fly home after the death has occurred and start to organise the burial or cremation over in England or Wales. The body will be returned as soon as all paperwork is in order. Who will collect the body when it arrives in England? Sometimes the funeral director will collect the body, or the insurance company will deliver the body to the funeral home.
