Article Body

Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 all persons applying for British citizenship are required to attend a citizenship ceremony. The citizenship ceremony is conducted by the Barnsley registration services and attended by the Mayor of Barnsley.

The citizenship ceremony is the final step before becoming a British citizen and has proved to be a popular celebration with those taking part.

During the ceremony, participants make an oath of allegiance to the Queen and vow to respect the United Kingdom's rights and freedoms. Participants receive a citizenship certificate, an information pack on their new rights and a commemorative photograph.

The Home Office, which administers all applications for British citizenship believes that attending a citizenship ceremony will help new citizens feel a sense of belonging to the wider community.

Citizenship ceremonies in Barnsley are held approximately every six weeks.

How can I apply for British citizenship?

All applications for British citizenship are handled by the Home Office.

Email: Home Office Enquiries

Since 1st November 2005 new applicants for British citizenship are required to go through a 'Life in the UK' test.

Applicants will have to demonstrate competence in English language as well as knowledge of life in the UK before making their application to the Home Office.

Once your application is processed, you will be sent details of the registration authority which will be hosting your citizenship ceremony.

Who should I speak to about my citizenship ceremony?

Once you have received your notification that your application has been approved you can speak to register office staff about the citizenship ceremony. Contact Barnsley Registration Service.

What will happen at the ceremony?

Attendance at citizenship ceremonies is by invitation only.

The ceremony takes approximately 30 minutes during which time you will make the oath and pledge of allegiance. You may swear or affirm the oath depending upon your personal wishes and religious beliefs.

The Mayor of Barnsley will present you with your certificate and a local photographer will take a photograph of you with the mayor. This complimentary photograph will be available from the register office seven to ten days after the ceremony. There is also the opportunity to take personal photographs after the ceremony.

The ceremony ends with the playing of the national anthem and refreshments are served.

You will receive an information pack including details of how to apply for a British passport at the Identity and Passport Service

What if I am unable to attend the planned ceremony?

Applicants must attend a citizenship ceremony within three months of being granted citizenship. If for any reason you are unable to attend the planned ceremony, please contact the citizenship officer at Barnsley Registration Service.
