As a result of the council elections, Labour gained 5 seats, Barnsley Independent Group lost 4 seats, and one seat previously occupied by an Independent councillor was also lost. The Conservative and Liberal Democrat seat count remained the same.

The political make-up of the 63-seat council is at the election was:

  • Barnsley Independent Group - 18
  • Conservative - 6
  • Independent - 1
  • Labour - 37
  • Liberal Democrat - 1*

* During the Municipal Year 2010/11 the Liberal Democrat Councillor joined the Labour Party. Therefore the 63-seat council currently stands at:

Access is from junctions 36, 37 and 38 of the M1 with J37 just 1 mile from the Town Hall (S70 2TA).

We have frequent rail services to mainline stations at Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds. There are also five airports within one hour of the town centre, namely Manchester, Doncaster, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Nottingham East Midlands and Humberside.
