  • All 16 and 17 year olds and full time students aged 18+ can access a number of activities at discounted rates with a  Passport to Leisure  card.
  • Barnsley FC's Community Sports & Education Trust  offers a range of high quality holiday clubs and programmes for young people whatever their ability.
  • Maxx is a scheme operated by Barnsley Premier Leisure which offers a 10 week block of activity sessions free to young people aged 11-19 years.  Please see the attached flyer for further information or alternatively you can contact Barnsley Premier Leisure on 01226 730060.
  • PlayActiv is a project funded by the Big Lottery Fund that offers open access free play opportunities for local children across Barnsley.
  • Sport Unlimited is a national 3 year programme being delivered across England, Spearheaded by Sport England but led and managed locally by County Sports Partnerships.  Sport Unlimited is designed as an introduction to sport for young people, giving them crucial tasters of what participation in sport can be like and transit into regular participation within the community in clubs, leisure centres and other settings.  Further information on the activities that are running in Barnsley can be obtained by clicking on the link to Sport Unlimited.

Charges/fees 

  • Where there is a charge for activities they are kept to a minimum and are set by the delivering organisations.

  • Passport to Leisure cards are available at a cost of £2

Opening times 

The Sport and Active Recreation section can be contacted between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 4:30pm on Friday.

Barnsley has a lot to offer everyone who lives, works and visits. We've a vibrant town centre, with a cosmopolitan mix of cafes, theatres, museums, art galleries and hotels.

Or, if shopping's more your thing, then you'll find plenty of high street stores and of course, our famous seven hundred year old market, open five days a week.

Travel...

Access is from junctions 36, 37 and 38 of the M1 with J37 just 1 mile from the Town Hall (S70 2TA).

We have frequent rail services to mainline stations at Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds. There are also five airports within one hour of the town centre, namely Manchester, Doncaster, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Nottingham East Midlands and Humberside.
