Article Body

The Barnsley Town Centre Partnership, in conjunction with the council, has produced some guidelines for street displays and advertising 'A' boards for businesses in the town centre.

Each business establishment is permitted a width of display of 0.6 metres directly in front of their premises, provided that there is at least 1.8 metres clear unobstructed width for pedestrians, particularly those with a disability.

One 'A' board is also permitted per entrance, subject to the same conditions. These must also be sited directly outside the premises.

Street displays and 'A' boards are not permitted outside of the Barnsley town centre area. You can apply if you are a business owner in Barnsley town centre. We will send you a copy of the current guidelines or you can click on Guidelines of Street Displays for more detailed information.

On request, guidelines are normally sent out within two to three working days. Any problems reported to us are normally investigated within two weeks unless they are presenting a serious impediment to road users. In such cases, we aim to respond within 24 hours.

If necessary the council will take enforcement action against any business that has sited a display or 'A' board in contravention of the guidelines or outside of the town centre area.

For further information and/or advice on providing a display or 'A' board for a business or to report a problem please contact the council:

  • by completing the online form Report a Street Display (Advertising Board)
  • by email to roads@barnsley.gov.uk
  • by telephone on 01226 773555 (24 hours)
  • by writing to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Environmental Services, PO Box 601, Barnsley, S70 9FA

Legislation and guidelines can be found in the following:

  • Guidelines of Street Displays
  • Highways Act 1980

We are committed to providing a good quality service to our customers and have published a service standard document that sets out what you can expect from our service, our response times and how you can provide us with feedback on how well we are performing.
