Article: Land and property - demolitions - control and advice Error loading MacroEngine script (file: ServiceSubNavigation.cshtml) Article Body The Building Act 1984 contains conditions that allow local authorities to control demolition in the interests of safety and to ensure that any disturbance and/or inconvenience to the public and occupiers/owners of adjacent properties is kept to a minimum. If you wish to demolish a building or part of a building, you are required to notify the local authority in writing as soon as possible usually giving a minimum of 6 weeks notice. A copy of the notice should also be sent to the occupier of any adjacent building, and to the appropriate gas and electricity providers so that their services can be safely disconnected prior to any demolition work. The council will then normally issue a demolition notice specifying steps to be taken during the demolition works to maintain public safety and amenity. Relevant information is provided on the application form for Notice of Demolition or this can be requested in person from The Civic Hall, Eldon Street, Barnsley, S70 2JL. Opening hours 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays) . For further information and/or advice, or to request an application form please contact the Council: by email to demolition@barnsley.gov.uk by telephone on 01226 772034 or 772158 by writing to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Environmental Services, PO Box 601, Barnsley, S70 2FA You must not begin a demolition unless you have given the appropriate notice under Section 80 of The Building Act 1984 and either the council has issued a Demolition Notice under Section 81 of the Act or 6 weeks has elapsed since giving notice. The Local Authority Demolition Notice (Section 81) may contain conditions under which the demolition is to be carried out and may also carry a time limit for any works to be completed. Failure to give notice or to comply with the conditions on the council's Notice is an offence under The Building Act 1984 - for further information on the enforcement of Demolition Notices please see Land and property - demolition - enforcement. There is a fee of £200.00 to process the demolition notice and to monitor the site works. Please enclose a cheque made payable to 'Barnsley MBC' with the signed and dated demolition form, along with a location plan (minimum 1:1250 scale) clearly indicating the building(s) to be demolished and as much information as possible. On receipt of the Notice of Demolition form and payment, the council has 6 weeks to respond with a Demolition Notice specifying conditions under which the demolition can be carried out. However, we will aim to do this within 4 weeks or earlier. You should inform the council as soon as possible if there are any changes to the information provided. Urgent problems may be reported out of hours on (01226) 773555.
