Bin Collection

Article Body

The household waste collection service provides a kerbside collection of household waste from domestic properties.

99% of households in Barnsley receive a segregated weekly collection with garden waste, cardboard, glass, cans and paper collected one week for recycling and the grey bin containing the rest of the household waste, mainly for landfill, is collected the following week.

All properties should have a wheeled bin or refuse sacks for household waste and variety of bins are available for recycling.

Flats and houses of multiple occupancy are usually supplied with communal waste and recycling containers.

Collection takes place on a four-day-week from Tuesday to Friday (some new properties and flats are collected on a Saturday) and you will have received leaflets with details of collection dates for your property. The leaflets include information regarding collections over Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year. In addition, we have introduced a new service that enables residents to view their collection details online, by using the 'When will my bins be emptied' webpage.

If you are moving into a new or previously empty property and wish to request commencement of waste and recycling collections, you can complete our new domestic waste collection form. You must be registered for council tax to be eligible for a household waste and recycling collection. Information will be shared with Benefits and Taxation department.

You can help by ensuring that your waste and recycling bins are placed on the kerbside, without causing an obstruction, preferably the night before or by 6.00am on the day of collection. Communal waste and recycling containers do not need to be placed on the kerbside as they will be emptied and returned to the storage area.

In the unlikely event that we have missed your household waste bin collection please report this to our Waste Management department after 2.00pm on your collection day by completing our missed bin form.

If you are unable to move your waste and recycling bins to the kerbside for collection due to a disability or medical condition or if you are aged 80 years and over you may be eligible for our Assisted Collection Scheme. For further information please refer to our assisted collection web page.

The cost of domestic waste disposal is included in the annual council tax charges. However a charge may be made for the delivery of bins including replacements and those lost or stolen. Please refer to related contents regarding bin provision.

If you wish to request a bin or report one missing or damaged please have full details of the name and address of the householder (or the name of the developer and plot number for new properties), details of the type of bin and cause of any damage or circumstances of loss for missing or damaged bins.

You should paint your house number on your bin if a number of bins are put out together to ensure you get your bin back.

If you have five or more permanent residents at your property and are using the full range of recycling bins you may be eligible for an additional capacity bin. For further information please refer to the additional capacity application form

If you have any excess waste that will not fit into your bin please consider special collection service for large items. Otherwise items should be taken to your nearest household waste recycling centre. For further details please see the related contents section.

If you believe that our operatives have spilled or dropped rubbish upon collection, please contact our Waste Management department by completing the waste spillage form.

Please note the following points

  • Don't overfill your bin or sacks - the lid should be closed.
  • Don't put glass or sharp objects in refuse sacks.
  • Don't put prohibited items (see list below) in your wheeled bin.
  • Don't put out any side refuse with your bin, it will not be collected.
  • There is no limit on the amount of specific recyclables collected.
  • If we miss a collection, let us know after 2pm on the day of collection.

The following items should not be placed in your wheeled bin

  • soil, rubble, or construction waste
  • business waste
  • electrical items
  • carpets
  • furniture
  • large toys
  • tyres
  • clinical waste
  • asbestos
  • textiles

If any of the above items are put in your wheeled bin or the lid is not closed then your bin will not be emptied.
