Barnsley Council operate an alternative weekly collection with general waste for landfill collected one week and recycling collected on the alternative week.

Each household should have the following:

  • A grey 240 litre bin for general waste.
  • A green bin for garden waste and cardboard
    The green bin is available in two sizes. The standard issue bin is 240 litres and there is a smaller 140 litre bin for those properties without gardens or with limited storage space. For more information please see the related content section.
  • A blue bin or bag: for recycling paper, magazines etc
     
  • A brown bin or green box: for recycling cans  glass bottles/jars and plastic bottles

To obtain new or replacement waste and recycling bins you may collect them free of charge from our depot at Smithies Lane, Barnsley S71 1NL between 9am and 3pm on Monday to Friday. Please bring with you proof of residency in the form of one of the following documents:

  • Current council tax bill
  • Utility bill (dated in last three months)
  • Recent bank statement
  • Driving licence
  • Rent Book
  • Recent purchase agreement

If you are exchanging a bin at our Smithies Lane depot please bring the damaged bin with you.

If you would prefer us to deliver bins to you there is a delivery charge of £15 (except for residents of 65 or over or residents on our assisted collection scheme). You can request new or replacement bins and pay for delivery by completing our new and replacement bins form. Alternatively, you can telephone our helpline on 01226 772045. Payment for delivery can be made by debit or credit card during the application.

An additional 140 litre bin is available as additional capacity for properties with five or more permanent residents. Approved additional capacity will be provided for a set period (usually 2 years), but remains the property of Barnsley MBC at all times, and may be removed without notice and with no refund of any related payment for delivery, if residents are found:

  • Not to be recycling
  • To be using the additional bin inappropriately
  • To have obtained the additional bin falsely
  • To have changed circumstances affecting their entitlement to additional capacity since the bin was issued

Waste Managment service need to verify that there are 5 or more persons permanently resident at the address. Adults who are named on the Council Tax bill do not need to provide evidence of their address, however, all other residents need to provide evidence by supplying a copy of the heading only from one of the following:

  • For adults, a bank or credit card statement dated within the last 3 months, or a utility bill dated within the last 3 months
  • For children, a copy of the annual  child benefit award letter or a copy of a bank statement showing the amount of child benefit paid and the address to which it is paid
  • For students, a bank statement or letter from higher education establishment confirming attendance and home address

Please ensure that the evidence clearly shows your address and quote the reference number provided upon completion of the application. If you have difficulty providing any of the above information for each individual please call the helpline on 01226 772045 to discuss further.

You can request an additional bin by completing our  Additional Waste Capacity form. If you are applying online, scanned supporting evidence can uploaded as part of the application. If you are applying by telephone, you can send evidence by post to the address below.

Before we can issue the additional waste bin, we need to check that you are using the recycling bins correctly. This process may take up to 4 weeks. Once these checks have been completed, we will contact you further. If an additional bin is approved, you will need to either collect it from Smithies depot or we can deliver at a charge of £15.

If your circumstances change that mean you are no longer eligible for the additional bin, or if you move house, please advise us by completing the Additional Waste Change of Circumstances form. If you move house within the Barnsley borough, please take the additional waste bin with you.

The personal information you provide will be used by the Council to process your request for additional waste capacity. In addition to this the Council may share this information with other Council and Government departments for the prevention and detection of fraud, including benefit fraud. Your information will be processed in accordance with the principles of the Data Protection Act 1998.
