Article: Health advice Article Body Although the health of people in Barnsley is improving it is generally worse than the England average. There are also health inequalities just within the Barnsley borough, with men and women living in less deprived areas more likely to live longer than those living in deprived areas. Tackling these health issues is a job for us all and requires the contribution of many different organisations, including the council, NHS Barnsley and some of our local multi-agency partnerships. The council and NHS Barnsley have specifically targeted the gap in life expectancy between Barnsley and the rest of the country, and between the most disadvantaged fifth of Barnsley and the rest of the borough. Some of our priorities are linked to lifestyle issues such as smoking, sexual health, obesity, diet and physical activity, however, we recognise that many other factors affect health. Access to services and facilities, employment, transport, the built environment, good social and community relationships are all good examples. We support a wide range of activities aimed at achieving our priorities and targets including: Promoting physical activity, such as the Barnsley Walking Mens Clubs Developing weight management services Supporting people to stop smoking, including through the Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service Promoting a variety of health campaigns, such as advice on sun awareness and skin cancer prevention, and Promoting a variety of health checks To find out further information on the work being undertaken or services available please visit the NHS Barnsley website.
