Elderly People In A Care Home

Article Body

Residential Care

A residential care home aims to provide the care and attention you would receive at home from a caring relative. The staff in a residential home can help with personal care such as washing, going to the toilet, taking a bath, getting up or dressing. The help is there when you need it, 24 hours a day. All meals are provided and there are activities that you can take part in - including outings. Visitors are always welcome.

Residential care homes aim to help you to lead an independent life in as homely a setting as possible.

All residential homes have to be registered with the Department of Health's Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC will carry out regular inspections of all residential homes to make sure that they meet the standards that have been set by the Government.

Nursing Home Care

Nursing Homes generally care for people who are more dependent and require the sort of care that can only be provided under the supervision of a qualified nurse. Nursing Homes are required by law to have a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day. All nursing homes in Barnsley are privately owned and managed. They have to be registered with and are regularly inspected by the Care Quality Commission.

Some care homes are dual registered. This means that the home can accommodate people needing either residential or nursing care. Some people may wish to choose a dual registered home so that if their relative's condition deteriorates they do not have to move to a different home. A couple with differing needs may wish to go into the same home.

You can either look for a home yourself or ask Adult Social Services for help. You can also get advice from some local voluntary organisations.

Adult Social Services can give you information about the range of homes in Barnsley to help you decide which will suit you best. They can also help you to visit any home you are considering, arrange a trial short stay and show you the latest inspection report on how the home is run. Inspection reports can also be viewed via the Care Quality Commission website.

Charging for Residential and Nursing Homes

If it has been agreed that living in a care home is the best way of meeting your needs, Adult Social Services will assess your ability to pay . For further information about paying for residential and nursing home care you can download the leaflet Advice About Finances.

For general information about residential and nursing home care and other services for older people you can download Your Choice 2010 Handbook of Services for Older People. This booklet contains a list of the care homes in Barnsley including their contact details.
