National Smile Month

Barnsley Central Library will play its part in the campaign for National Smile Month by hosting an Oral Health Awareness stand on Tuesday May 29th, when staff from the Barnsley Community Dental Service will be in attendance promoting the importance of good oral hygiene.  While stocks last they will be handing out free toothbrushes and toothpaste and there will be information and advice for visitors to the stand.

Sound and Vision Loyalty Card

Barnsley Libraries now operate a  Sound and vision loyalty card scheme for all customers who borrow CDs and DVDs.  Customers will receive a loyalty card stamp for each CD or DVD they pay to borrow and when the card is full they will receive a free loan of any CD or DVD in stock - it's as easy as that.  Remember all requests for CDs and DVDs in stock are also free.  If you would like to find out more about the scheme and the great range of other services please contact the Central Library 01226 773911.

The Money Advice Service

The Money Advice Service is an independent organisation, available to help everyone understand and manage their money better.  Visit their website - moneyadviceservice.org.uk - for free, clear and unbiased advice to help you make the most of your money.  The health check, their new online money planner, is for everyone.  It takes just 10 minutes to answer some straightforward questions and get a personal action plan showing the steps to take to help take control of money straightaway, and how to plan for future goals.

Bookstart Bear Club

The Bookstart Bear Club is a fun, free membership club for all babies, toddlers and preschoolers.  It was launched in all Barnsley libraries at the beginning of July and is proving to be really popular with families across the borough. 

Under-5s can sign up at their local library for a free membership pack including their Bookstart Bear Club passport.  They will receive a pawprint stamp on their passport each time they borrow books, share stories in the library or attend activities such as storytimes.  For every six stamps they will be awarded a certificate and there are ten to collect, with the last being a special golden certificate.  For more information, ask at any branch of Barnsley Libraries, ring 01226 773935 or e-mail bookstart@barnsley.gov.uk

There's also an online version of the Bookstart Bear Club at Bookstart,org.uk .  Families can sign up for access to excusive games, personalised book recommendations, information about events, earn online reward certificates and more.

NHS Lifecheck

Why not investigate the NHS LifeCheck service - a simple, user-friendly online heath service designed to help people assess and manage their own lifestyles and give them the information they need in order to make positive choices and improve their health outcomes.  Simply visit NHS Lifecheck and answer 8 simple questions.

All LifeChecks are completely private and confidential, offering lots of information and guidance together with details of local and national support services.

MI Card

A card scheme for under-18s living in Barnsley which allows free (or reduced rate) travel by bus, free swimming at any of the Barnsley Premier Leisure pools, and which can also be used as a library card.  Find out more at mi card

Tiny Tots Welcome Session

Barnsley Libraries would like to invite you and your little one to a Tiny Tots Welcome Session at Barnsley Central Library.  Come along and learn how you and your baby can enjoy books, stories and rhymes together and how it benefits their development.  Find out about Free Bookstart packs for your child and discover what the library has to offer.  Meet other new parents and find out about local services for families with young children and collect your 'Tiny Tots Welcome' goody bag.
Sessions take place on Monday afternoon 1.45pm-2.45pm.  To book a place or to find out more please telephone 01226 773935, e-mail Bookstart@barnsley.gov.uk or call in at the Central Children's Library.

Barnsley has a lot to offer everyone who lives, works and visits. We've a vibrant town centre, with a cosmopolitan mix of cafes, theatres, museums, art galleries and hotels.

Travel...

Access is from junctions 36, 37 and 38 of the M1 with J37 just 1 mile from the Town Hall (S70 2TA).

We have frequent rail services to mainline stations at Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds. There are also five airports within one hour of the town centre, namely Manchester, Doncaster, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Nottingham East Midlands and Humberside.
