Article Body

Bus shelters are provided by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). They are provided where a bus stop for boarding passengers has been established and some shelter from the elements is desirable. A set of criteria is used to establish those sites that qualify.

A request for a shelter needs to be sent to the SYPTE. This should identify the bus stop and outline the need for a shelter. When a request to provide a shelter is received by the SYPTE they will test it against the criteria they have established. This criteria takes into account such factors as exposure to weather, passenger usage, bus frequency, environment, and so on.

If they consider a shelter is justified they will arrange a site visit with the council and South Yorkshire Police. This visit will consider the road safety aspects of the location and whether an adequate footway width for pedestrians will be maintained. If the criteria are met then the SYPTE will then be authorised to erect an approved type of shelter.

Some shelters carry advertisement panels and these are provided under a contractual arrangement between the shelter manufacturer and the SYPTE and require planning consent.

The construction of the shelter and its subsequence maintenance is the responsibility of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

When making a request for a shelter please direct it in the first instance to:

The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive
P. O. Box 801
Exchange Street
Sheffield
S2 5YT

Telephone: 0114 2767575

If you need to complain about the siting of a shelter because it creates a road safety hazard then you should initially contact the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, you may contact the council if you do not receive a response from the SYPTE.
