Article: Street lighting Online interactions for this service Report against this service Article Body Barnsley Council's street lighting service is responsible for the upkeep of 32,000 street lamps and 2,500 illuminated traffic signs and illuminated bollards. Inspections are carried out during the hours of darkness for lamp outages at fortnightly intervals during the winter and four weekly during the summer. A street lamp could remain unlit for up to four weeks before we are aware of it. Good street lighting not only improves the urban environment and quality of life, but also helps to reduce crime and fear of crime. For further information on this and other safety issues please see our content on Community Safety. Information and legislation relating to street lighting is available in the Highways Act 1980 and the Public Health Act 1961 (c.64). We are committed to providing a good quality service to our customers and have published a service standard document that sets out what you can expect from our service, our response times and how you can provide us with feedback on how well we are performing. The council is committed to repairing street lighting faults within six working days of them being reported to us. We will attend and make safe a street lighting emergency within one hour.
