5,204 Barnsley children benefited from new financial support for food during the half term week, meaning that families could buy essential food. Funded by Barnsley Council, it backed Marcus Rashford’s campaign to provide free school meals during school holidays.
The council wanted to guarantee that children, parents and carers who needed additional support over the half term holiday were given it, independent of any national decisions.
Barnsley Council Leader, Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, said: "We’re really pleased with how many families we’ve been able to support over the last two weeks. We didn’t want to see children who receive free school meals go hungry over half term, so it’s brilliant that families came forward to claim the payment.
“Our teams worked quickly to process the claims, and that led to 5,204 children being supported, at the value of £78,060.”
