Adult Skills and Community Learning self-assessment reviewed at Cabinet

Today, at the cabinet meeting, members were asked to review the Adult Skills and Community Learning (ASCL) self-assessment for the full academic year 2018/19 and accept recommendations for future improvements.

ASCL is funded primarily through the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and Adult Education Budget (AEB). The service also brings in self-generated fees from the businesses and individuals who access courses. The funding is used to support and engage with individuals and groups to help them improve the skills and qualifications needed to get into work, improve at work, or improve their wellbeing and confidence.

ASCL, which runs a wide variety of courses across the borough, welcomed Ofsted in November 2018 and received a judgement of “Good”. The service is now making improvements to keep in line with the new Ofsted Education Inspection Framework which came into effect in September 2019.

Cabinet members were asked to accept the 2018/19 self-assessment that states that the service continues to be a good provider in Ofsted terms, due to several strengths such as:

  • Highly effective support during and in between lessons to make sure learners can overcome any barriers and don’t fall behind in their work
  • Inclusive and welcoming learning environments
  • High quality, constructive written and verbal feedback for learners

There were a few areas for improvement identified, which ASCL will continue to work on in anticipation of any future Ofsted inspections.

Cllr Robert Frost, Cabinet Support Member for Regeneration and Culture, said: “The service works hard to help brings residents and communities together to increase their confidence, stay mentally active and achieve their goals. Adult Skills and Community Learning are in a fantastic position to keep on improving and make the service even better for our residents."
