Almost 97% per cent of Barnsley children get their first choice of secondary school this year

It’s National Offer Day and parents have been informed which secondary school their children will start in September. A staggering 96.9 per cent of children have been offered their first choice of secondary school - the largest percentage of first choice offers achieved in recent years.

The council has also seen 98.2 per cent of families apply for the child’s secondary school place online – an increase of 9.2 per cent from last year. This not only makes the process more streamlined, but it also makes it quicker for families to receive their secondary school offer.

There were 2690 applications in total. With 2607 children (96.9 per cent) receiving their first choice, 40 (1.5 per cent) were offered their second choice of school, and seven (0.3 per cent) got their third choice.

36 (1.3 per cent) did not get any of their preferred choices but have been allocated a school place at an alternative school by Barnsley Council’s School Admissions team.

Cllr Margaret Bruff, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “This is excellent news, and we’re incredibly proud to see a significant increase in first choice secondary school places. This is a result of effective partnership working between our school admissions team and secondary schools.

“We recognise some children and families may have received disappointing news today, and we will support them in their next steps. Please notify our School Admissions team in writing if you don’t want to accept the place offered within 10 working days of receiving the offer.

“Those who haven’t received a place for their child at their chosen school can complete a Notice of Appeal form and return it to us by Wednesday 31 March. Appeals will be held between May and June 2021.

The Admissions Team is happy to support any parents wishing to appeal with appropriate advice and guidance throughout the process. They can be contacted by emailing admissions@barnsley.gov.uk or calling (01226) 773677.
