Communities in Barnsley are getting in gear for this year’s Tour de Yorkshire as the Town centre, Mapplewell and Royston are stepping up the efforts to make Barnsley the stand out town at this year’s event.
Roadshows in all three hot spots for this year’s race have already taken place with three more planned in due to the popularity and community engagement. The follow up roadshows, aimed at keeping in touch with the communities planned events and aiding decorations and involvement, are scheduled for:
- Barnsley Town Hall - Tuesday 19 February at 6pm
- Mapplewell Village Hall – Tuesday 5 March at 6pm
- Royston Lifelong Learning centre- Thursday 4 April at 6pm
The race’s return to Barnsley has also seen the return to The Great Barnsley Bunt Offs. The bunt offs epitomise the Town Spirit theme of #LoveIt as people of all ages and abilities can have fun whilst they craft and create decorations for the town and villages, some locations are also offering FREE CAKE as well as other refreshments. There’s already a long list of events planned at numerous locations around the route. Check out the venues, times and dates here. The events are free to attend and there’s no need to register.
For those wanting to get up close and personal to this year’s race, why not take the opportunity to have your photo with the official trophies. Both the men’s and women’s winners trophies will be taking a tour of the borough on Wednesday 6 March with stop offs at a couple of opportunities for the public to come and take a look.
They will be in the Barnsley Markets at 10am until 10:45pm. There will be an opportunity for Mapplewell residents to see the trophies at the Co-op at 11:45am until 12:30pm and finally they will be at the Royston BPL from 3:15pm to 4:30pm.
The trophies will also be making a stop at four local primary schools close to the 2019 route as part of the official trophy tour as the excitement for the race in Barnsley builds.
