Barnsley Council and Barnsley Hospital working in partnership to support families

Barnsley Council and Barnsley Hospital have created an innovative new role to help families attending the hospital’s paediatric A&E department. The Early Help Navigator (EHN) role builds a positive and supportive relationship with children, young people and their families. They provide families with early help services and support in a holistic, family-centred way. One Barnsley parent has shared the huge impact this role has had on her family. Watch the video of her story here.

This work was also shortlisted for an LGC Award in November 2021.

Our EHN is a trained family support worker based within Barnsley Hospital. When families attend A&E, they’ll be put in contact with the EHN for early help services and support.

The role has been very successful and is now working in other areas, helping families on hospital wards. Other departments in the hospital, such as midwifery and adult services, also use the role for advice on early help services.

Cllr Trevor Cave, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services at Barnsley Council, said: “We’re really proud of the impact the Early Help Navigator role has had on children, young people and their families. Our borough is a place that fosters and grows ambition, enabling everyone to be the best they can be. We want everyone to have the right support early on to live happy, healthy lives and achieve their potential. Bringing together council and hospital services is a fantastic, innovative way of achieving this.”

James Griffiths, Clinical Lead for Medicine at Barnsley Hospital, said: “The Early Help Navigator is vital in supporting the families of children who attend our Paediatric Emergency Department, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. It ensures that we take a holistic approach to our paediatric patients and incorporate the entire family and support structure that child or young person. The EHN is the link between the acute setting and the community, enhancing the patient experience and journey in Paediatric Emergency Department.

“Moving forward, working with our partners is going to be essential in providing care to the people of Barnsley and this is an example of a successful initiative between Barnsley Hospital and Barnsley Council.”
