Barnsley Council asks what ‘A day in the life of’ its residents is like

Barnsley Council is launching an engagement campaign to find out how the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted the daily lives of its residents.

Titled ‘A day in the life of our new normal’, the campaign will provide residents with an opportunity to tell the council how the pandemic has changed their lives by recording their thoughts and feelings about their mental and physical health on a short and simple diary sheet on Tuesday 3 November 2020.

All entries will be anonymous, and the information will be used to help shape future health and social care services and COVID-19 response plans. It will also feed into the next Director of Public Health annual report, which each council’s Director of Public Health has a statutory duty to produce.

Julia Burrows, Barnsley Council’s Director for Public Health, said: “The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has presented many challenges which people have coped with in different ways.

“We want to try to understand the impact the past eight months has had on the mental and physical health of our residents as well as how people work, travel and live.

“It is difficult to know or predict what the long-term impact of the pandemic will be as we continue to adapt to our ‘new normal’, but one thing that has remained constant is the community spirit within Barnsley.

“We have seen countless examples of people going the extra mile to help one another, and this will be a key driving force in Barnsley’s recovery from COVID-19.”

Councillor Jim Andrews, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health, added: “The last time we did ‘A day in the life of’, we were delighted by the number of responses we received. It was interesting to see the different perspectives from people across the borough on the daily events that affect their mental and physical wellbeing.

“We were able to use the information provided to make some changes to make sure we were giving our residents the best service possible.

“We want as many people as possible to be involved this time around so we can gather as much information as we can. This will help us to make sure our residents are living the happiest and healthiest lives possible, particularly given the context of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“We are still establishing our ‘new normal’ and this report will help us to understand what help and support our residents need as we continue to implement our COVID-19 recovery plans.”

All diaries will be anonymous, and we have made sure that entries will not identify anyone when they are submitted.
