Barnsley Council awards Wates Living Space a repairs and maintenance contract

Barnsley Council’s Property Repairs and Improvement Partnership (PRIP) has, for the last ten years, been delivered jointly by Berneslai Homes Construction Services in two thirds of the borough and Kier in one third of the borough. The contract with Kier will end on Tuesday 31 March, and a new contract has been awarded to Wates Living Space from Wednesday 1 April. Berneslai Homes (Construction Services) remain a key part of the PRIP and will continue to deliver services to tenants as before.

Barnsley Council has undertaken a procurement exercise to select a contractor able to offer both social and financial value. Wates Living Space has been selected as the preferred contractor and will bring the following benefits to Barnsley:

  • Materials and sub-contractors will be kept within Barnsley, so money is spent locally
  • Social value activities, like workshops for residents
  • Apprenticeships and training opportunities
  • Innovation in energy efficiency
  • Skills will be shared between Berneslai Homes (Construction Services) and Wates

Cllr Robert Frost, Cabinet Support Member for Regeneration and Culture, said: “We’d like to thank Kier for their work and dedication over the last ten years. Going forward, we’re excited to work with Wates Living Space and see what benefits they can bring to Barnsley.

“I’d like to remind residents that there will be very minimal change and disruption in the service you receive. The repairs residents receive will be of the same quality and standard as before.”

Wates Living Space will deliver responsive repairs and planned maintenance, gas servicing and electrical works across homes in Barnsley, in addition to works to refurbish void properties in the borough.

The appointment marks Wates Living Space’s growth in the local authorities repairs and maintenance sector, following the business’ recent appointment to carry out repairs across homes in West Lancashire.
