Barnsley Council proud to be presented with two prestigious International Safety Awards

We’re extremely proud to announce that we have been presented with two prestigious Health and Safety Awards - an International Safety Award at Merit standard from the British Safety Council and a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Award at Gold standard, both demonstrating our commitment to health and safety excellence.

International Safety Award received for 20 years running

The International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world who have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year. Importantly, the award also reflects and acknowledges a commitment to wellbeing and mental health at work, which is a high priority across the organisation.

Impressively, this also marks the 20th successive time that we’ve been presented with such recognition. In the latest 2023 awards, 774 organisations across 44 countries worldwide won an International Safety Award, spanning all sectors, ranging from construction and manufacturing to power and utility sectors. Of all the winners, Barnsley Council was one of 296 organisations to achieve a Merit Award, which is a huge achievement.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: “The British Safety Council applauds Barnsley Council on their achievement. The award is in recognition of their commitment and hard work to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health.

“Our heartfelt congratulations to Barnsley Council. All of those working at the council should be enormously proud of their achievement.”

RoSPA Award received for 22 years running

The RoSPA Health and Safety Awards are the largest occupational health and safety awards programme in the UK. The programme recognises organisations’ commitment to continuous improvement in the prevention of accidents and ill health at work.

This year marks the 22nd consecutive year that we have been awarded a Gold Award for our health and safety performance during 2022, demonstrating our dedication to ensuring all our staff get home safely at the end of every working day.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s Achievements Director, said: “Accidents at work and work-related ill health don’t just have huge financial implications or cause major disruption – they significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. That’s why good safety performance deserves to be recognised and rewarded.

“We are thrilled that Barnsley Council has won a RoSPA Award and would like to congratulate them on showing an unwavering commitment to keeping their employees, clients and customers safe from accidental harm and injury.”

Sarah Norman, Chief Executive of Barnsley Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to hear that we have been awarded not one, but two internationally recognised awards, reflecting our commitment to protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of our employees.

"Protecting our employees and keeping them safe is of utmost priority and these awards are a real reflection of this. We have been awarded the International Safety Award for two decades this year and the RoSPA Award for over two decades – what an amazing achievement. Our employees are at the heart of everything we do as an organisation, and I look forward to this being recognised for many more decades.

“This achievement demonstrates the hard work and dedication of our Health and Safety team, the fantastic work they do, and the efforts made across the organisation and our schools to implement good practice and keep health, safety and wellbeing a key priority.

“A big well done and thank you to everyone involved in achieving these awards.”
