Barnsley councillors approve Local Plan

Barnsley councillors have approved adoption of the borough's local plan at today’s Full Council meeting - Thursday 3 January 2019.

The Local Plan considers the future use of all land within the borough up to the year 2033. It’s designed to provide enough land in the right places to attract more businesses and investment into the borough, helping to grow the economy and create over 28,000 new jobs. It also aims to provide better housing with the creation of over 21,000 new homes. The plan will be used when considering planning applications and its adoption will provide clarity to businesses, residents and council partners.

The plan has undergone rigorous public examination lasting almost two years. During this time there have been four stages of hearings and two sets of public consultation. Throughout the examination, the independent Planning Inspector has recommended some significant modifications, which are now incorporated into the plan.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re very pleased that Barnsley’s councillors have approved the adoption of the borough’s Local Plan. This represents an important milestone for Barnsley and will provide certainty in relation to how the borough is developed and protected until 2033.

“Throughout 2019 our focus will be on creating a series of guidance documents and master plan frameworks which will provide further clarity on how the policies in the plan are interpreted.  These documents will be subject to public consultation and provide further opportunities for residents to have their say.

“We want to thank everybody who's been involved in the examination process over the last two years and look forward to working together with residents and businesses to make Barnsley a better place to live, work, invest and visit.”

The final plan is now available to view on Barnsley council’s website.
