Barnsley launches a virtual book of remembrance recognising the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Barnsley has launched a virtual book of remembrance that recognises the impact of Covid 19 on individuals and communities as well as the incredible contributions people have made during the pandemic. It will create a lasting memory for the people of the Borough

From Thursday 18 June, people are invited to leave messages that remember and pay respect to friends, family and loved ones who have lost their lives during the pandemic, as well as ones that recognise, commend and appreciate those who have worked tirelessly to support local communities.

Messages can include a name, memory, photograph, drawing or poem to honour or share thanks.

Barnsley Artist Graham Ibbeson, has created a moving charcoal drawing entitled ‘Down to Earth’ inspired by the crisis, that will be featured in the virtual book.

The virus has caused untold devastation and tragedy across the world and Barnsley would like this online platform to be an opportunity to share precious memories and stories of those who have been impacted.

Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council said: “Coronavirus (COVID-19) has had such a huge impact on everyone’s life, causing untold distress and devastation.  Here at Barnsley we felt it was important for people to have a public platform which would allow them to reflect, remember, share memories and support our local people and communities.”

The virtual book of remembrance is just one of the ways Barnsley will recognise the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Plans also include a town centre memorial incorporating a poignant phrase by Barnsley’s ‘Poet in Lockdown’, Ian McMillan, summarising people’s feelings towards the pandemic; introduction of the Mayor’s special award medals; and a  review of the Freedom of the Borough scheme in 2021 to incorporate an opportunity to recognise the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19).
