Cabinet Members have approved plans to transfer three new floodlit tennis courts to Barnsley Lawn Tennis Club in Wilthorpe under a long term lease.
The not for profit, community run club is the only tennis club in Barnsley and encourages people of all ages to come along, get involved and play tennis. The club is particularly popular with younger tennis players as it has an excellent junior coaching programme.
The new courts are situated next to the clubs existing courts on Huddersfield Road, and will help to grow their membership, coaching services and competitions. This will not only be of benefit to the club but to the people of Barnsley and the borough as a whole, providing another way that residents can have fun and stay active.
Tennis is a great sport for people of all ages and fitness levels. With this expansion, Barnsley Lawn Tennis Club is hoping more people will start to play tennis and improve their health.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Barnsley Lawn Tennis Club will benefit from this expansion and the people of Barnsley will be able to enjoy more of this fantastic facility.
“With more space and memberships available, residents will no longer have to travel further afield if they want to join a local tennis club. The new courts will provide more people with the opportunity to get involved in tennis at all ages and to increase physical activity levels, doing something fun.”
This news is linked to Town Spirit, our new way of working better together. We believe, that if everyone in Barnsley does just one thing, we can make our borough a more welcoming place to live, work, invest and visit.
