For the first time in 15 years, 45 young musicians from the Barnsley Town Concert Band are going on tour. After a successful online audition, the band have been invited to perform on the 'Videopolis Stage' at Disneyland Paris and two other concerts around Paris in July.
The concert band has made incredible progress since lockdown, performing at exciting events like Music for Youth, the National Concert Bands Festival and our very own Brassed On.
James, an Instrumental Music Tutor with the Barnsley Music Service and conductor with the band since 2021, said: “I was keen to organise a concert tour abroad as it will greatly benefit our students in improving their teamwork and helping them to develop an awareness of different cultures. The students will perform in some well renowned venues, including the main stage at Disneyland, which is an amazing opportunity for them. We will look forward to representing Barnsley on this tour!”
Ella, a concert band player and Penistone Grammar student, said: “The Paris trip is a brilliant opportunity for us. We can show off everything we’ve learned during our time at the music service and how we’ve improved as a band. Paris will push me out of my comfort zone, and I hope to be a much more confident musician and person.”
There are opportunities for businesses to sponsor this trip. The concert band pupils are fully funding this trip, which comes at a challenging time for many families. We would be delighted to provide all members with a performance tour t-shirt for each concert. If local businesses are interested in sponsorship opportunities, please contact BarnsleyMusicService@barnsley.gov.uk or call 01226 291525.
Barnsley Music Service are the leading organisation of our local Music Hub and would like to thank Arts Council England for their continued support to our young people and schools across the borough. Their support alongside that of our partners, ensures music making is accessible and inclusive for all.
