Barnsley Music Service look to hit the right notes at regional performance

Barnsley Music Service will participate in a South Yorkshire Music Celebration later this month showcasing the best musical talent the county has to offer.

Working alongside Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield, the four lead organisations will go to The Dome in Doncaster for a live performance at 5.30pm on Saturday 19 October.

The event will celebrate the high-quality and success of the music makers in South Yorkshire and follows on from previous achievements for the four, including a joint performance at the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2017.

This time the focus is on ensemble playing and putting together four massed bands/orchestras consisting of around 300 young people all playing at grade 4+ standard.

Barnsley Music Service is taking the lead on the massed Brass Band and will work closely with music hub partners Grimethorpe Colliery Band to put together a large scale band for the event. The band will be conducted by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, who has led some Grimethorpe Youth Band courses and has also composed the modern music the band will perform at the event.

Other massed ensembles will include a Wind Band led by Doncaster, a Big Band led by Rotherham and a Symphony Orchestra led by Sheffield who will perform the 1812 Overture. There will also be a world premier finale item specially commissioned for the event by local composer Andy Smith entitled ‘Mambo De Yorkshire’.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture), said: "Music is such an important part of our world and it's imperative that the council and schools continue to support artistic and creative subjects.

"It's fantastic to see so many young people from Barnsley involved in this celebration of music and I would encourage people to get across to Doncaster and take in one of the shows!"

Alex Francis, lead officer for Barnsley Music Service, added: "We are delighted to continue to have such a strong relationship with inspirational music hub partners Grimethorpe Colliery Band. The band are so generous with their time and so committed to music education in the local community.

"We hope by showcasing the Grimethorpe Youth Band at this special South Yorkshire event, even more young people will join the band at its future termly workshops and continue to keep our amazing brass band heritage alive."

Tickets are available from The Dome's box office and are priced £5 for adults and £4 for concessions. For more information, visit
