Barnsley Schools Catering strategic review

At their next meeting on Wednesday 17 November, cabinet members will consider a report on a strategic review of the Barnsley Schools Catering (BSC). Cabinet is being asked to approve BSC continuing to operate and support the recommendations described in the report.

In 2019, cabinet asked for a review of the service, which has been completed over the last two-and-a-half years. The review looked at many elements, like management, finance, and operational delivery. We’ve identified twenty recommendations. These will help create a more modern way of working, make sure the service can grow and be financially sustainable, and support children’s health and wellbeing.

Some of the key recommendations are:

  • Setting strategic direction with a more commercial approach
  • Make sure there’s enough skills and capacity in the team, including digital skills
  • Collaborative working with teams across the council, including Public Health
  • An improved offer to schools, including seasonal menus, healthy choices, and simpler online systems
  • Increasing meal uptake
  • Better use of data and performance management

A report will be brought back to cabinet in 2023/24 to give an update on BSC.

Cllr Alan Gardiner, Cabinet Spokesperson for Core Services, said: “We’re committed to giving Barnsley children healthy, nutritious food which will support their health and wellbeing. I’m pleased to see the work already being done on BSC and feel confident in the recommendations to make the service even better.”
