Barnsley to welcome new Poet Laureate

Barnsley is about to welcome new Poet Laureate, Eloise Unerman, as she takes the reigns on the three year role.

Eloise, 19, from Goldthorpe is an exciting new award winning talent, who is making waves in the literary world.  She takes over from the Bard of Barnsley - Ian McMillan.  During his time as Poet Laureate, Ian created many magnificent pieces all linked to the achievements of the borough. His work was varied and highlighted what an amazing place to live, work and visit Barnsley is.

Eloise officially starts her duties on Monday, 1 April; however there will be a free event, open to all, to celebrate and welcome her on Monday, 25 March.  The event will be held at Experience Barnsley from 5.30pm.  Ian will be there to hand over the crown and support Eloise, who has been working with him for some time in preparation for the important role.

Barnsley’s Poet Laureate was created as part of the Hear My Voice initiative, a three year project which aims to promote poetry and literature to the borough. The project has been generously funded by Barnsley TUC Training Ltd and programmed and delivered by Barnsley Museums.

Cllr Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said: “We are excited that such a talented and exciting new writer has taken over the position of Barnsley’s Poet Laureate.  Her work will connect with people of all ages and shine a spotlight on the fantastic things happening in the borough.  We hope this role will support Eloise and catapult her to great things in her career.  We would also like to thank Ian MacMillan for his dedication and support over the past three years, which has been a real triumph for Barnsley.”

Eloise Unerman, new Poet Laureate, said: “"I am so honoured to be offered the role of Barnsley's Poet Laureate so early in my career and be given the chance to get involved in some of the exciting things coming up. I'm looking forward to following in Ian MacMillan's footsteps and hope to be able to give something back to the wonderful town I grew up in."
