Councillor Steve Green received a warm welcome at the council’s full council meeting last week as he was formally elected as the borough’s new Mayor for 2018/19.

Cllr Green has represented Monk Bretton Ward as a local councillor since 2012 and will continue to do so alongside his mayoral duties. The new Mayor will be joined by his wife, Mrs Tracey Green who’ll take on the role of Mayoress.

Retiring Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Jeff Ennis and Mrs Margaret Ennis were thanked for their hard work, dedication and services to the borough over the last year. Cllr Ennis gave a heartfelt speech where he expressed how much he’s enjoyed his year as Mayor and thanked his wife for her ongoing support. Cllr Ennis now looks forward to continuing in his role as local councillor for the North East.

The new Mayor and Mayoress will be fundraising for the Mayor’s Charity throughout the mayoral year and have chosen to support Barnsley Hospice and Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support - BIADS.

The new Mayor said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be elected as the new Mayor of Barnsley for 2018/19 and I’m really looking forward to the year ahead. During my mayoral year, I’ve decided to celebrate the role of volunteers across the borough in our local communities and the amazing work they do.

“This is one of the reasons I’ve chosen to support Barnsley Hospice and BIADS through the Mayor’s Charity as they rely so heavily on the dedication and hard work of volunteers to deliver invaluable services.”

The Mayor will formally mark the start of his mayoral year with a special Civic Service to be held on Thursday 14 June, 6.30pm at St Mary’s Parish Church, Church Street and all residents are invited to attend and welcome the Mayor and Mayoress into their new roles.
