Barnsley's famous outdoor market to launch with a week of celebration

Barnsley’s famous outdoor market is being celebrated with a week of exciting activities from Monday 13 June.

The outdoor market has been revitalised alongside recent developments in Barnsley town centre and businesses are now in their final locations under fresh, modern gazebos which anchor into the ground.

To celebrate, there will be a week of activities including an official opening event on Friday 17 June in which the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Sarah-Jane Tattersall, will ring the Market Bell at 12.30pm before live music from Rock Choir South Yorkshire at 1pm.

Cllr Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture at Barnsley Council said: “It’s great to see Barnsley’s outdoor market flourishing. Barnsley is growing, we have a thriving and vibrant town centre and the market is at the heart of it.

“We are proud to be a market town and the fantastic new stalls will add to our already outstanding offer.

“I encourage everyone to come into the town centre and support Barnsley’s brilliant outdoor and indoor markets – and remember to visit our fantastic local markets too, they also offer a great variety of products.”

Sue Round the President of the NMTF Barnsley Group said: "It's great to see the outdoor market as it is now, it really brings the whole redevelopment together. The markets are such an important part of Barnsley Town Centre and it is great that they have received the investment and recognition they deserve."

Visitors will have the chance to meet Barnsley Market’s Mascot Veggie on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 3pm.

They can also get their hands on free goodie bags throughout the week and there will be daily opportunities to win a £20 Barnsley gift card by completing Veggie’s Friends Trail around the market. Simply collect a trail card from the customer service desk in Barnsley Markets.

The activities will take place every day until Saturday 18 June excluding Thursday.
