Breastfeeding welcome at Barnsley museums and parks

An event to celebrate two new members of the Barnsley Breastfeeding Welcome Here scheme will take place at the Cooper Gallery, Church Street, Barnsley, on Thursday, 14 June, 1pm to 3pm.

The scheme is led by the council’s 0-19 Infant Feeding Service.

As well as a certificate presentation to all five Barnsley Museums sites and Barnsley Parks Services to mark their membership, the event will also celebrate early close loving relationships between parents and baby.

Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health, Cllr Jim Andrews, said: “Breastfeeding has been shown to improve relationships between mother and child and brain development. We want to celebrate those close loving relationships which the act of breastfeeding can help develop.

The Welcome Here scheme helps to signpost families to places where they are able to feed their babies in welcoming, comfortable and relaxed environments.”

Members of the public are welcome to drop in to the event and people who bring their babies and young children along will be invited to make hand and foot prints of babies which it’s then hoped will be used for an information and celebration display.

Any venue open to the public is invited to sign up to the Welcome Here scheme. On joining, venues receive online training which provides guidance to ensuring a welcoming environment for breastfeeding families. Venues are also listed on an online directory which signposts families to breastfeeding-friendly venues across the borough.
