For five months apprentices and traineeship learners have been working hard to bring an empty home in Goldthorpe back to life.
Barnsley Council supported Big Local funding and training organisation Barnsley Community Build with a £17,500 grant towards the work. This enabled learners to develop their skills to launch their chosen careers.
The house on Albert Road was fully refurbished bringing a quality, affordable home back to the rental market.
The single property:
- provided 75 on site NVQ assessments.
- provided 382 apprenticeship training and skills development days on site.
- supported two full-time construction supervisor jobs.
- supported five full-time construction apprenticeship salaries.
- provided 14 work experience places for traineeship learners.
- secured full-time employment for nine people.
The project also inspired neighbours and local landlords to invest in their properties, helping to improve the area overall. When rented, the property will add to the New Homes Bonus, which the council receives for each new home made available in the borough and will provide an income from council tax payments.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said: “Empty homes can have a negative impact on communities. Neighbours can suffer if the property attracts vandalism or fly-tipping, which was the case with the Albert Road property.
“This has been a fantastic project which has not only delivered a great end result but also provided training opportunities for the young people of Barnsley.
"The standard of the work carried out is superb and will provide quality affordable accommodation for a local family.
“Due to the success of Albert Road, another five empty properties in Goldthorpe will be renovated by the end of 2018."
The council offer several schemes for people looking for help to improve an empty property. This includes the possibility of the council buying an existing empty property.
