Calling all Barnsley children to enter The King’s Coronation Poster Competition

With less than five weeks to go until we join the nation to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King, we’re cordially inviting all children across the borough, aged four to 16 years old, to enter our King’s Coronation Poster Competition.

The brief is simple:

  • Design a poster to celebrate the King’s Coronation in Barnsley.
  • Your poster must incorporate the following wording: Celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III in Barnsley, 6 May 2023.
  • Please use A4 paper or cardboard.
  • You’re welcome to use crayons, felt pens, paints and any other craft material.
  • All entries must include name, address, contact number and child’s age on the back.
  • Send entries FAO Mayor’s Office, Barnsley Town Hall, Church St, Barnsley S70 2TA or email scanned copies to katetownrow@barnsley.gov.uk.
  • Deadline for entries is Friday 28 April 2023 at 5pm.
  • Please read full terms and conditions.

Entries will be judged by the Mayor of Barnsley and a winner and runner up will be selected from three age categories - 4 to 7 years, 8 to 11 years, and 12 to 16 years.

All winners will be invited to the mayor’s parlour in the town hall on Monday 15 May at 2pm for refreshments and to receive their prize, certificate, and commemorative gift.

A selection of entries will be publicly displayed in the town centre for everyone to enjoy and copies of the winning entries will form part of our commemorative archive records for future generations to look back on in years to come, just like we can enjoy looking back at archives from the Queen’s Coronation celebrations in 1953.

We’d love to see as many children and young people get involved and enter the competition as possible, so please help us spread the word and sharing or displaying our poster at schools, community centres, scouts and brownie groups. The poster can be printed at https://bit.ly/3Mgwsgl.

The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Sarah-Jane Tattersall, said: “The King’s Coronation is a once in a lifetime experience for many and will create a significant moment in history, and to be a part of that is a real honour.

“Our competition is a wonderful way to involve our younger generations and will provide the opportunity to get creative and produce artwork that reflects the King’s Coronation in Barnsley. Whether it’s a picture of the King himself or a Kingly T-Rex, I can’t wait to see what the creative children of Barnsley produce. I look forward to seeing all the entries and meeting the winners in my parlour to present their prizes.”
