Celebrating the invaluable volunteers of Barnsley this Volunteers Week

In the last 18 months, more than ever, we have all felt the impact of what volunteering can do in our communities and seen first-hand the fantastic work done by people of all ages and abilities.

Across our borough, we have seen amazing people come together to help others through the pandemic and work to make their community better places to live.

Volunteers have been vital to supporting the work of the council and its partners during the pandemic; they have helped us keep people safe, assisted residents with a wide range of tasks, and offered a friendly voice at the end of a phone.

We’ve seen so many people volunteering last year from delivering food and prescriptions, making face coverings and scrubs, litter picking and keeping our borough clean, to packing food boxes and helping with the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

This Volunteers Week, we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work done by our remarkable volunteers in Barnsley, and inviting people to see what’s happening in their local area that they can become involved with.

Keep an eye on the Barnsley Council Facebook and Twitter pages, where we’ll be celebrating fantastic volunteer work from the past year and sharing volunteering opportunities from across the borough.

Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adults and Communities, said: "I am always amazed and humbled by the fantastic work that volunteers do in our borough. Throughout the pandemic our communities have shown how we all pull together in Barnsley to help one another.”

“We have seen some amazing acts of kindness and generosity, fabulous new projects emerge, and individuals going above and beyond. Volunteering is so rewarding, with both the volunteer and the recipient benefitting from the generosity given. I want to thank all our amazing volunteers from across the borough for their work and encourage anyone who wants to volunteer to take part in activities local to you.”
