Barnsley Council’s Cabinet members have received a report which sets out the validated education outcomes for the borough’s pupils at each stage of the National Curriculum.
The Validated Education Outcomes in Barnsley (2019) report, follows December’s provisional report and presents a comprehensive picture of continuing improvement for Barnsley pupils compared to national averages in many indicators.
The percentage of pupils achieving the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics combined at Key Stage 2 is now one percentage point above the national average.
The percentage of pupils achieving a strong pass (grade 5 and above) in English Language/Literature and mathematics – known as The Basics - at Key Stage 4 is above national for the very first time since its introduction in 2016/17, while pupils achieving a standard pass in this measure (a grade 4 and above) has improved further to 2.7 percentage points above national.
The average Attainment 8 score for Barnsley pupils (a pupil’s average score across eight subjects) increased from 42.5 in 2018 to 44.1 in 2019 and is now just below the national average, which increased from 44.5 to 44.7.
Cllr Margaret Bruff, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “These results highlight how well we are doing as a borough, outperforming neighbouring authorities in many areas.
“It’s fantastic to see continued improvement in Barnsley. We want every child to be able to achieve their potential and we will continue to drive results forward, by working with school and academy leaders to deliver a sector-led education improvement strategy.
"I'd like to thank all the young people and school staff involved for raising the standards in Barnsley, as well as parents and carers for supporting them."
