Going to a new school is a very important step for children and it’s that time of year when many parents and carers have to apply for their children’s admission to next year’s reception class or for current Year 6 pupils’ secondary school of preference.
To make the process of applying for a school place as easy as possible for parents and carers, Barnsley Council provides an online application service which can be used for children starting primary or secondary school for the first time.
Children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 will be ready for starting primary school in September 2018. It’s important that parents and carers submit their application before the deadline of 16 January 2018.
The closing date for secondary school applications is Monday, 31 October 2016.
To apply online visit https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/services/children-families-and-education/schools-and-learning/school-admissions-and-transfers/ and choose primary school or secondary school places, then the apply online option.
It is strongly advised to apply online as there are a number of benefits to this method. The system is easy to use, applicants will receive email acknowledgement of their school preferences and there is no form to take into school unless the application is for a voluntary aided school. There is no risk the application will get lost and the result of any application can be sent by email, which is usually quicker than by post.
People who are unable to access the internet can also apply using a paper common application form. Detailed admissions, appeals and transfer information, along with a list of Barnsley schools and academies, is available from the schools and learning webpage.
The information available online is intended to guide people through the school admission and transfer process. The School Admissions team is also on hand to answer any enquiries by email - firstname.lastname@example.org or on 01226 773689, 773677 or 773588.
Families can also get help and support through contacting the Families Information Service on 0800 0345 340, infoFIS@barnsley.gov.uk and at their local Family Centre.
School admission figures for 2017-18 show that in Barnsley some 93.15 per cent of children received an offer for their first preference primary school and 95.22 per cent for secondary pupils.
