Council scoops International Safety Award

We have been crowned overall Sector Winner - Local government, defence and public services in the British Safety Council International Safety Awards 2021 for protecting our employees from the risk of injury and ill health at work.

We are one of the 12 truly elite organisations to be awarded overall Sector winner in the International Safety Awards 2021, recognising our commitment to keeping our workers and workplaces healthy and safe during the 2020 calendar year.

In their 63rd year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world, which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme's independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill-health during the previous calendar year. The awards also recognise organisations that have shown commitment to wellbeing and mental health at work.

In 2021, 387 organisations won an International Safety Award. They span all sectors and are drawn from the United Kingdom, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Eighty-five organisations were awarded a Distinction, 155 organisations were awarded a Merit, and 147 organisations achieved a Pass. However, only a very select number are crowned overall Sector winners.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated us on our success, saying: "The British Safety Council commends the council on their achievement. The award is in recognition of their commitment and efforts to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill-health.

"My heartfelt congratulations to all of the individuals, teams and organisations that have won a prestigious International Safety Award. The winners have made substantial efforts to protect and enhance the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone in their organisations.

"All the winners, as well as those who were shortlisted, have gone above and beyond in dedicating additional time, resources and commitment to ensuring their work, teams, and workplaces remained healthy and safe during 2020 amid a global pandemic."

Shokat Lal, our Executive Director for Core Services, added: "We're incredibly proud to have received this award. To be one of the few organisations crowned a sector winner is a fantastic achievement and a real feather in the cap for us.

"I would like to say congratulations and offer a heartfelt thanks to every member of our staff, who have all worked incredibly hard in a year like no other to keep us safe and healthy in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic."
