ECO Stars to celebrate 10-year anniversary

The ECO Stars Fleet Recognition Scheme will celebrate its tenth anniversary in a ceremony at Barnsley Town Hall on Friday 8 March.

The free scheme was set up in South Yorkshire in 2009 when the councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield came together to tackle air quality issues in the region which were being caused by transport. It helps fleet operators to improve efficiency, reduce fuel consumption & emissions and make cost savings by providing expert and practical advice.

Since its inception, ECO Stars has gone from strength to strength and recently broadened its remit to include a scheme for taxis and private hire vehicles. Fleet operators from Barnsley and Doncaster will be present for the launch of the new scheme in their areas, which coincide with the anniversary celebrations.

It has now been adopted by many other council areas in the UK including York, Edinburgh and Warrington as well as several cities across Europe. In total, the individual schemes have more than 570 members with 40,000+ vehicles.

The anniversary will also see the launch of the ECO Stars Taxi Scheme in Doncaster and Barnsley with presentations to be made to fleet operators.

Matt Gladstone, Executive Director for Place, said: “We're thrilled to see the ECO Stars scheme reach its 10-year anniversary.

“It is a scheme which continues to thrive and it is fantastic to see other councils getting involved to help the environment.

“The success of ECO Stars shows that we remain committed to protecting our borough and keeping Barnsley clean and green to preserve the town for future generations.”
