Enjoy a host of free family activities in Barnsley Town Centre this month

With half-term and Valentine's Day fast approaching, we are putting on an array of exciting activities in Barnsley Town Centre this February – helping you keep your loved ones and families entertained.

Experience Barnsley has a jampacked programme of fun family-friendly activities planned for the school half-term. This includes SENsational – a multisensory experience for children with PMLD and autism – on 13 February, Egyptian crafting on 14 February and a daily ‘Mummies’ LEGO trail. There’s also an Amazing Animals printing workshop at The Cooper Gallery on 17 February.

In Barnsley Markets, you can drop into one of the free creative workshops on Monday 13 February. This includes Balloonatic, where you can make balloon hearts and flowers, and Makedoo, a make-and-do artwork mask workshop.

Over at the Library @ The Lightbox there’s a special Play Doh session on Thursday 16 February. This fun activity gives children the chance to get creative and learn about basic circuits and electricity.

It’s not all about the kids though, Barnsley Town Centre offers the perfect place for a date night this Valentine’s Day. You can grab a bite to eat or enjoy a cocktail at one of the many great restaurants.

With loads of Valentine’s offers, why not try TGI Friday’s cocktail masterclasses or the new Valentine’s menu at The Salt House. There’s also Dolly’s Desserts, who have a special date night package available.

For activities, take in a film at the state-of-the-art Cineworld Barnsley who are showing the 25th Anniversary remaster of Titanic or go bowling at the nearby Barnsley: Superbowl UK.

Additionally, there’s the opportunity to show some love with a special Valentine's selfie competition, running between 10-17 February. Couples and friends can take a photo in The Glass Works shopping boulevard and tag @TheGlassWorksBarnsley on social media for the chance to win some top prizes from The Botanist – including a meal for two or cocktail masterclasses. Visit The Glass Works website for full details.

The opening of The Botanist later this month is just another highly anticipated addition to the booming food and drink scene in Barnsley Town Centre, joining the likes of Nando’s, Fridays, Starbucks, Falco Lounge, Urban Burger and Market Kitchen.

Cllr Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture at Barnsley Council, said: "Building on the success of 2022, where we saw a 46% increase in footfall over the past 12 months, welcoming nearly seven million visitors into the town centre, we are lining up another exciting calendar of public events this year.

“People are really taking pride in our town centre, which has just been awarded a coveted Purple Flag for a fourth consecutive year. This award recognises Barnsley as a high-quality inclusive destination that provides an entertaining, diverse and safe night out.

“We understand times are challenging for many right now, particularly in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. Our free and low-cost activities will help take the pressure off families over the holiday period, give them fun and affordable things to do, and bring the community together here in Barnsley Town Centre."
